Abstract
This study has been carried out in order to extend studies related to literature in forest culture and todisseminate knowledge about the cultural benefits of forests. I have analyzed the metaphors and the symbols of treesfeatured in 99 poems from 「The Book of Odes」. Metaphorical and symbolic significance is derived from the topicof each poem, which are classified with common and similar groups. The metaphorical and symbolic meanings oftrees in the poems are as follows: offspring, moral virtue of characters, family affection or fraternity, the beautifulfaces of women, the passing of time, nostalgia, the meeting or union of a man and a woman, eternal life (or longlife), and useless things or people. The results of this study may be used as a new method in making observationsregarding the relationship between forests and literature.
