1970년대 국어문법 연구의 방향과 수사 방식에 대한 반성적 고찰

Abstract

The purpose of this paper is to reflect on the academic development of contemporary Korean linguistics, according to development of rhetoric used in the inquiry. Every academic field is defined by its own special devices and patterns of rhetoric, by existence theorems, arguments from invisible hands, and appeals to textual probabilities or archives, themselves textures of rhetoric (Nelson, Megill,(?) McCloskey1987: 5). All studies of Korean linguistics have also used their own rhetoric in their argumentation. Since the 1970's, the writing styles in the Korean linguistic field have unified into the APA style (American Psychology Association style), a typical social scientific writing style. This means that Korean linguistics was transformed from a human science field to a social science field that combined scientism, pursuing methodical, rational, scientific and objective inquiry, with a social science focus. The rhetorical unification was caused by introducing a new linguistic theory, Transformational Grammar. The main concept of this new universal grammar was to make linguists dedicated to discovering abstract rules and principles of language in the same way as mathematicians. Nowadays, Korean linguistic inquiry is strongly affected by scientism, which has had a negative, rather than positive, effect on the academic development of Korean linguistics. Therefore, Korean Linguists should reflect on the rhetoric used in inquiry and try to reform the rhetoric on the basis of Human Science.
