Abstract
The present study explores constructed dialogues in computer-mediated discourse with reference to the interactive written discourse known as the Internet Relay Chat(IRC). This paper first introduces the participation framework (Goffman 1974, 1981), in which participants in perceptual range of the interaction have some participation status such as animator, author, principal, or figure. This study then discusses the notion of constructed dialogues of Tannen(1989), who claims that reported speech is not reported at all but is creatively constructed by a current speaker in a current situation. Then this paper investigates functions of the seven constructed dialogues in Korean IRC: inner speech dialogue, guess dialogue, listenership dialogue, summarization dialogue, instance dialogue, fadein dialogue, and choral dialogue. By examining various types and functions of constructed dialogues in cyber communication, this study attempts to contribute to a better understanding of computer-mediated discourse.
