Abstract
The purpose of the study was to investigate the current state of workplace health promotion programs using forests and to identify the needs for forest welfare. The study applied the mixed method approach integrating quantitative and qualitative research. The study conducted a focus group interview with 7 occupational health managers as well as a survey of 201 occupational health managers. More than half of the respondents (58.6%) said they had never heard of forest welfare and 34.3% said they had heard of the term but did not know exactly what it means. Most of the participants replied that forest welfare is highly necessary for workers and that it would be helpful for workers’ health management. Particularly, occupational health managers considered utilizing forests to be effective in reducing job stress (95.5%), reducing depression (83.0%), and increasing communication between colleagues (81.3%). To promote forest welfare services for workers, it is necessary to raise awareness of the benefits forests provide for humans and demonstrate the cost-effectiveness of health promotion programs using forests.
