Abstract

National parks are areas that represent the Korean natural ecosystems, nature, and cultural sights. As visitors to national parks increase in recent years, it is critical to determine reasonable capacity in developing park management policies. Academically, carrying capacity is defined as the maximum allowed level within a scope that does that damage the quality of resources. National park capacity in Korea is classified into physical carrying capacity, ecological carrying capacity, and social carrying capacity. Physical carrying capacity, in turn, is categorized into active facility carrying capacity and stay facility carrying capacity. Active facility carrying capacity of trails, which national park visitors mainly utilize, can be calculated by estimating the maximum utilization rate or adequate utilization rate of the visitors. As shown, calculating the standard of area required by national park visitors is a critical variable in calculating the physical carrying capacity. In an attempt to develop alternative visitor management policies, the current study established a standard for objectively identifying area required by visitors, a basic data point for calculating physical carrying capacity of trails. As for the methodology, pedestrian characteristics—in the pedestrian facility service level analysis under the transportation field—were used to develop a spatial module accounting for visitor attributes. Intervals between visitors were estimated to calculate the occupying area of each visitor. The analysis revealed that the adequate area needed is 35㎡ and the minimum area needed is 14㎡. These figures are not significantly different from 34㎡ and 10㎡, which were previously used to calculate the utilization rate of trails. Such results objectively verified that the previously used figures for areas needed by visitors are not erroneous. In addition, this study is meaningful in that it established logical grounds for area needed by visitors, which did not have adequate grounds for calculation. To advance the theory on the calculation of the physical carrying capacity of trails, future research must identify the correlation among visitor density, visitor speed, and visitor volume to develop an index for calculating the carrying capacity of trails.
