Abstract

This study was conducted to investigate the components, emission characteristics, and the correlation with meteorological factors of NVOCs (Natural Volatile Organic Compounds), a key forest healing factor, in warm temperate forest stands. The research was carried out in the warm temperate forest stands of Wando Arboretum, Jeollanam-do, South Korea, with forest stands categorized into riparian, streamside, and forest areas based on their location. The plant community structure was surveyed for each plot, and NVOC emissions were collected monthly from May to October between 10:30 AM and 11:30 AM for one hour. In particular, samples were collected every three hours over a 24-hour period in May, July, and September. The key findings are as follows: First, in terms of plant community structure, Quercus acuta Thunb. had the highest importance value in the canopy layer, while Camellia japonica L. was dominant in the understory layer. Second, the total monthly NVOC sampling volume was highest in October, followed by August and June, with α-Pinene exhibiting the highest amount at 31.708 ppm (23%). Third, for the total 24-hour NVOC sampling volume, α-Pinene>Eucalyptol>Linalool were predominant in May, while α-Pinene>Eucalyptol>trans-Sabinene hydrate were prevalent in both July and September. The temporal emission trends indicated that NVOC emissions peaked between 22:30 and 01:30 in May, between 19:30 and 22:30 in July, and between 16:30 and 19:30 in September. Fourth, regression analysis between monthly and 24-hour NVOC sampling volume and meteorological factors showed that both air temperature and humidity were statistically significant, with the regression model explaining over 53% of the variance, indicating a positive correlation. To more clearly elucidate the characteristics of NVOC emissions and trends in warm temperate forests, it is necessary to collect diverse data across different times, forest stands, and locations.
