Abstract

Hwaseong that constructed as a new town of Hanyang in Chosun dynasty has many different characteristics with local castles in terms of the location and the scale of castle. The road systems of Hwaseong have a unique type in Korea, because they have irregular patterns affected by geomorphology. The road systems of Hwaseong were not well planned, excluding the grand roads such as the north-south axis and the east-west axis and they were just constructed for the residents? availability and the convenience of making a castle. The city of Hwaseong and its road systems have had a current view since the era of Japanese invasion, and they had changed in terms of straightening, route changing, altering the width and so on. As the traffic roads in Hwaseong developed indirectionally, the Hwaseong became a major node for connecting Seoul and the southern province. In these days, the factors that changed the Hwaseong?s road systems were the demolition of the city during the Korean War, the formation of shanty quarters, urban reconstruction, restoration of Hwaseong.
