Abstract

This study reviews the characteristics of Mexico’s import substitution industrialization and their background of industrial location. For this, it surveyed several papers and analyzed the data of “Guia de la Industria de México.”Import substitution industrialization was a crucial stage of Mexico’s modernization and industrial reformation from agriculture and mining to manufacturing. The spatial impact of import substitution industrialization was very impressive. Mexican government considered Mexico City as the core region that could maximize the efficiency of import substitution industrialization. Especially, the huge market and the abundant capital attracted lots of manufactures. Monterrey, the northern city with the rich mineral resources and the proximity to the U.S. flourished as the core of industrialization, too. Especially the positive support of government and the foreign investment made Monterrey as the city of large enterprises. Monterrey’s industrial system was characterized by the interior industries, which were influenced by the locations of the large companies. The period of import substitution industrialization was the time of real modernization, economic boom, and institutionalization. Modern Mexican society, economy, and institutions were achieved through the import substitution industrialization. However, the period of import substitution industrialization exacerbates the Mexican regional gap.
