Abstract

This study attempted to apply specific approach on kitchen, bedroom, storage and garden as a process of reestablishing vision on space through ‘home,’ the main stage of Strindberg’s 『Miss Julie』(1888), and as an epistemic process which breaks up male-centrality. In particular, ‘Kitchen’ is a space of women’s daily routine and functions. It also becomes a space of power struggle between the ruler and the ruled as well as a space of conflict between men and women. Furthermore, a kitchen window is a heterotopic space which symbolizes desire for freedom or liberation from repression with liberalistic setting on bridle between women and servants. ‘Garden’ is a typical space for reflecting femininity. It is also heterotopic as an ideal type which is contracted with the kitchen that represents reality and third space which exceeds the boundary between private and public spaces. Her suicide at the garden can be interpreted as the expression of her desire to erase her past and escape to the other space. This study analyzed the works from the 19th century so that it would not be able to rule out all the views on feminine spaces at that time. Even so, it is meaningful as a feminist study which has been performed for reexamining a way of thinking about women’s space.
