Abstract
The concept of flexibility is becoming increasingly important as firms attempt to adapt to the changes in the new competitive landscape. However, little research exists that examines the major antecedents to or the consequences of firm flexibility. In this paper, I argue that the CEO and TMT are important antecedents to firm flexibility. Specifically, I suggest that CEO tenure will have a curvilinear effect on firm flexibility while TMT diversity will have a positive effect. Additionally, I develop arguments to suggest that flexibility can act as a double-edged sword with regards to firm performance. More specifically, while the effect of flexibility on firm performance will be positive in uncertain environments, its effects on firm performance will be negative in stable environments. I conclude with some implications as well as directions for future research.
