Abstract
This article reviews debates on post-socialist cities from the perspective of comparative urbanism while drawing out theoretical and empirical implications for North Korean urban studies. Comparative urbanism is effective in revealing the blind spot that the existing studies on post-socialist cities are epistemologically sandwiched between the core (Euro-American urban studies) and the periphery (the source of a post-colonialist critique against the core). Then, it takes more heed of the geographical complexity and multi-dimensionality of post-socialist cities not grasped by typical notions such as “global city” and even “post-socialist city” crafted by the West. On the other hand, the existing North Korean urban studies are caught in a territorial trap by adhering to the geographical and localized particularities of North Korea. Ultimately, this paper would contribute to escaping the territorial trap of North Korean urban studies by discerning insights and limits of comparative urbanism and its application to post-socialist cities.
