Abstract

To study North Korea’s cities is useful for explaining the implications of urban marketization. As a city is the microcosm where people are constrained by the state power and reacting to it in their everyday practices, a micro analysis of North Korea’s cities is suitable for understanding its system-level transformation. Also these cities have their distinctive characteristics embedded in their historical formations. In this context an application of two methods ― a contextualized comparison and the framework of uneven and combined development ― is necessary. This paper argue that on the basis of these methods a reformulation of the multilateral ‘state-market-society’ relations can be made, which would help to explicate to what degree the state’s dominant role can be extended in the urban marketization process. An in-depth interview with the refugees or questionnaire survey are the principal data collection methods in the studies of North Korea’s cities. The data collected by these methods is useful. However, it should be treated carefully because most of the refugees are ex-residents in the regions near the northern border. It has some biases which reflect geographically specific traits. To solve this problem, the ideas of some methods are proposed in this paper which include an interdisciplinary research on some topics, the application of a quasi commodity chain analysis and the tracing of the transformation in urban physical space.
