Using a resource-based view of the firm and institutional theory, we examine factors that influenced the formation of Korean business groups (chaebols). Findings from logit regressions show that the formation of business groups through diversified expansions has been influenced by institutional factors such as institutional isomorphism as well as efficiency-oriented strategic considerations of exploiting existing resources.
