Abstract
This study has a different viewpoint from the existing ones in that 'hane' form of the sixteenth century Korean is regarded as 'an informal style of politeness.' First, while '-hane' form has been recognized as the lower rank than '-hanaida' form so far, in this study they are regarded as the same form of politeness. Secondly, the style of politeness in the Middle Age Korean has not been divided into formal and informal, but this study premises that there is a difference between them and shows that '-hane' form is informal. The justification of this study is supported by the following logical steps. First, on the premise that the most reliable sign is the grammatical ending confirmed directly in the material in case of studying the sixteenth century in which Korean speakers' intuition didn't hold good, this claims that it is right to suppose they are both 'polite form' because 'hane' form also has a politeness mark 'yi' as in 'hanaida' form. It aims to reflect on the existing views which only expressed the difference of ranks but didn't have any evidences.
