Abstract

The author examined 97 place names of Kogooryo Dynasty in Samguksagi (A History of Three Kingdoms) Volume 37 and observed that 93% (205 phonemes) of the 70 place names identified were loaned from Archaic Chinese while 7% (15 phonemes) of them were from Ancient Chinese. Only 2% (4 phonemes) of all the phonemes loaned (220 phonemes in total) showed end-consonants of Archaic Chinese so that the phonemes must be coda consonants changing from Archaic to Ancient Chinese. Therefore, the author guessed the record year of the History back around the 5th century. During that period, the Kogooryo language must have a vowel system of six phonemes such as /이(i)/, /우(ü)/, /오(u)/, /으()/, /(ɐ)/, /아(a)/. The list frequency of each phoneme ranged from 71 times /아(a)/ through 42 times /이(i)/ to 37 times /오(u)/ to 28 times /으()/ to 24 times /(ɐ)/ to 9 times /우(ü)/. There might not exist the contrast phonemes 〔으() : 어(ä)〕. A phoneme [어(ä)] was not created.. Reconstructive vocabulary 81% in the Kokooryo language connected Silla, Bekje and middle Korea's language. So I think unified language in the Three nations.
