초록
The operations of the Coalition Forces in Iraq and subsequent sectarian conflicts among the Iraqi population have created massive population movements, and so many Iraqis have fled to the neighbouring countries of Syria and Jordan. Syria has had to shoulder the burden of hosting 1.2 million Iraqi refugees. Iraqi Christian refugees have little prospect of returning home, due to the present and continuing trend of weakening religious and ethnic pluralism in Iraq. The Iraqi refugees in Syria are officially regarded as temporary residents, and so are deprived of the means with which to establish their lives in Syria. This paper addresses the question of vocational training programmes which have been organized to support Iraqi refugees in Aleppo, Syria, as a part of humanitarian operations. I present one such activity, called the ICDL(International Computer Driving Licence) training course, by which Iraqi Christian youth in Aleppo can participate and learn IT skills. The organizers seek to include in their teaching their idea that Iraqi Christians in Syria should acquire marketable skills in order to integrate them into Syrian society and improve their prospects of living successfully in Syria. Yet Iraqi students who participate in this course do not recognize its economic potential, but use the facilities as a place of refuge from the discrimination and hardship they suffer in their daily life in Syria. I examine the problems experienced by the vocational training organizers and their students due to the social and political issues related to these refugees.
