초록
Technology has been used for a long time for foreign language learning and teaching. Its potential has been proven effective and successful for second and foreign language learners and teachers. In English as Foreign Language (EFL) settings where natural target language input is limited, technology-enhanced language education has gained considerable attention. Recent advances in technology make it easy, fast and economical to learn English with exposure, practice, and interaction opportunities in the target language. Such instant worldwide connection made possible by videoconferencing keeps changing the way people learn foreign languages. The aims of the present study were two-fold: 1) to identify how videoconferencing-mediated instruction (VMI) is used for Korean EFL learners and 2) to provide suggestions of how and what to do for an effective and successful introduction of VMI into the Korean English Language Teaching (ELT) field. The results showed that an increasing number of Korean EFL learners benefited from VMI in six different types of videoconferencing-mediated classes. The paper further provides problems and suggestions to successfully apply VMI into Korean EFL settings.
Abstract
Technology has been used for a long time for foreign language learning and teaching. Its potential has been proven effective and successful for second and foreign language learners and teachers. In English as Foreign Language (EFL) settings where natural target language input is limited, technology-enhanced language education has gained considerable attention. Recent advances in technology make it easy, fast and economical to learn English with exposure, practice, and interaction opportunities in the target language. Such instant worldwide connection made possible by videoconferencing keeps changing the way people learn foreign languages. The results showed that an increasing number of Korean EFL learners benefited from VMI in six different types of videoconferencing-mediated classes. The paper further provides problems and suggestions to successfully apply VMI into Korean EFL settings.
