한국과 미국의 예비교사들의 교육과 교직에 대한 견해 차이 들여다보기: 문화교류 프로젝트의 온라인 대화분석을 중심으로

초록

본 연구의 목적은 한국의 초등 예비교사들의 교육과 교직에 대한 인식을 살펴보고, 미국의 예비교사와 어떻게 다른지를 탐색하는 데 있다. 이를 위해 한 문화교류프로젝트에 참여한 미국의 예비교사 37명, 한국의 예비교사 42명의 비동시적 온라인 소집단 토론 내용을 질적으로 분석하였다. 미래 교사로서의 교수목표는 11개의 범주로 분류되었는데, 미국 예비교사들은 배움에 대한 가치와 즐거움을 강조한 정서적 측면의 교수 목표를 강조한 반면, 한국예비교사들은 자아발달 및 적성교육 측면을 가장 중요하게 여겼다. 두 문화의 예비교사들은 미래교사로서 가지고 있는 어려움과 관련해서 공통적으로 교수방법, 학급관리, 교사로서의 정체성 관련 문제를 많이 언급하였는데, 그 중에서 미국 예비교사들은 학급 및 학생의 행동관리 부분을, 한국 예비교사들은 교수방법 측면을 가장 큰 어려움으로 인식하고 있었다. 좋은 교사가 되기 위해 갖추어야 할 지식과 기술에 대한 인식 면에서도 미국 예비교사들은 수업 기술을, 한국 예비교사들은 학생 이해를위한 지식을 각각 좋은 교사의 가장 중요한 자질로 지목함으로써 문화 간 차이를 드러냈다. 본 연구는 미국과 한국의 예비교사들의 자발적이고 자연스러운 온라인 대화 내용을 질적으로 분석하여 문화·보편적으로 혹은 문화·특징적으로 나타나는 두 문화 예비교사들의 교육과 교직에 대한 인식을 비교·탐색하였다는 점에서 연구방법론과 교사교육 분야, 그리고 학교현장에 시사하는 바가 크다.

Abstract

This study explored Korean and American preservice teachers’ perceptions of what teaching is and their concerns as future teachers. Participants included 42 Korean and 37 American preservice teachers in three asynchronous online discussion sessions of an intercultural project. Data sources included 30 written transcripts of all discussion sessions produced by 10 mixed groups. Data analysis was inductive and aimed at generating themes. Eleven categories were identified with respect to preservice teachers’ aspirations for teaching and most participants’ goals for teaching touched on more than one category. Interestingly, whereas Korean preservice teachers emphasized self-development and aptitude education, Americans described affective aspects of learning the most. Korean preservice teachers mentioned teaching methods and skills as their greatest concern in becoming new teachers, whereas Americans focused on classroom and behavior management the most. Regarding their perceptions of what knowledge or skills are required to be good teachers, whereas American participants described teaching skills as most crucial, Koreans emphasized knowledge of children’s development for understanding their future students. Findings suggest that culture impacts an individual’s perceptions about teaching and teachers, and highlights the potential importance for teacher educators to consider students’ conceptions of teaching contextualized in different cultures.
