An Experimental Phonetic Study of Monophthongs in Elderly Speakers from the Goheung

This study analyzes the monophthongs produced by elderly speakers of the Goheung dialect using experimental phonetics. Vowel formants were measured from the speech data of 15 male and female speakers in their 70s and 80s. Previous studies have reported that the vowels /ㅟ/ and /ㅚ/ are realized as monophthongs in a nine–vowel system among elderly speakers in the Goheung dialect. However, current elderly speakers show a shift to a seven–vowel system in which /ㅟ/ and /ㅚ/ are produced as diphthongs or with /w/ omitted. It was confirmed that /ㅐ/ has merged towards /ㅔ/, and /ㅣ/ and /E/ are realized closely. Additionally, the serial movement of back mid–vowels which is currently reported in Korean, is not observed.
