Abstract
This study examines the Korean Language Textbook published in St. Petersburg in 1899, focusing on its grammatical explanations. For this study, we analyzed the textbook from the perspectives of phonology, morphology, and syntax. To assess the validity of the grammatical explanations in the Korean Language Textbook, we referenced other dictionaries and textbooks published during the same period. The examination of the Korean Language Textbook and the reference materials revealed that there are some differences between the textbook’s explanations and contemporary Korean, which can be attributed to differences between the phonological and grammatical systems of Russian and Korean. Furthermore, this study suggests that the author’s dialect may have influenced the explanations in the Korean Language Textbook. By examining the Korean Language Textbook, we were able to compare and contrast the phonological and grammatical systems of Korean and Russian in the late 19th century. We also identified the main dialectal characteristics of the Yukjin region and determined the influence of the Yukjin dialect on the description of the Korean language in Kim Byeong-ok’s Korean Language Textbook.
