외현적 자기애성향의 어머니를 둔 청년들의 경험에 대한 내러티브 탐구

본 연구의 목적은 외현적 자기애성향의 어머니를 둔 청년들의 경험에 대한 내러티브 탐구를 통해 그들의 삶과 경험의 의미를 이해하고 적절한 상담을 제공하도록 함에 있다. 이를 위해 외현적 자기애성향의 어머니를 둔 청년의 삶, 각자가 생각하는 의미, 지금 여기에서의 삶과 이야기를 담았다. 연구참여자로는 외현적 자기애성향의 어머니를 둔 청년 3인을 선정하였고 회당 평균 90-120분, 총 5회의 심층 면담을 진행하였다. 본 연구에서의 참여자들의 시선과 이야기를 따라가며 이들의 경험에서 공통으로 나타나는 의미를 발견하였다. 첫째, 이들은 자기에게만 관심 있던 자기애성향 어머니로부터 철저히 소외되고 거부당했다는 외로움과 공허함으로 마음에 큰 구멍을 느끼고 있었다. 둘째, 이들은 자신을 창피해하고 작은 실수로도 심하게 꾸중하는 어머니로 인해 자신에게 문제가 있다고 여겼다. 셋째, 이들은 자신이 싫어했던 어머니의 모습을 닮아가는 자신을 보고 있었다. 넷째, 이들은 사람들에게 거부당하거나 버려지지 않을까 하는 유기불안이 내재하여 타인과 건강한 관계를 맺고 안정적으로 유지하는 데 어려움이 있었다. 다섯째, 이들은 차갑고 냉정하며 자기에게만 몰두되어 있는 어머니에게 따뜻하게 이해받는 경험이 거의 없었기에 어머니에 대한 원망과 분노의 감정이 깊었고 이를 수용하기까지 오랜 시간이 필요했다. 여섯째, 오랜 고통의 순간을 버텨온 이들은 지금 여기의 삶에 충실하며 삶의 희망을 노래하고자 했다. 본 연구는 자기애 성향자에 초점이 맞추어져 있던 기존 연구에서 좀 더 나아가 가족, 특히 자녀의 경험과 의미를 탐색했다는 데 의의가 있으며 이를 통해 향후 상담에서 이들을 이해하고 효과적으로 개입하도록 하는 데 도움이 될 수 있을 것이다.
Abstract
The purpose of this study is to narratively inquire about the experiences of young adults with a narcissistic mother in order to understand the meaning of their lives and experiences and to provide appropriate counseling. To this end, this study captures the lives of young adults with a narcissistic mother, their perceived meanings, and their lives and stories in the here and now. Three young adults with externalizing narcissistic mothers were selected as participants in the study, and five in-depth interviews were conducted, lasting an average of 90-120 minutes per session. As we followed the gaze and stories of the participants in this study, we found their experiences had a lot in common. First, they felt a huge hole in their hearts due to the loneliness and emptiness of being completely alienated and rejected by their narcissistic mother, who was only interested in herself. Second, they felt that there was something wrong with them because their mother was embarrassed by them and severely reprimanded them for small mistakes. Third, they saw themselves becoming more like their mother, whom they hated. Fourth, they had an underlying abandonment anxiety that made it difficult for them to form and maintain healthy relationships with others. Fifth, because they had rarely experienced warmth and understanding from their cold, distant, self-absorbed mother, they had deep feelings of resentment and anger toward her, which took a long time to come to terms with. The significance of this study is that it goes beyond the existing research that focuses on narcissistic individuals to explore the experiences and meanings of families, especially children, which may help us to understand and intervene effectively in future counseling.
