이 글은 질적 연구자이면서 정체성 연구자인 나, 나의 지도 학생이었던 현화, 그리고 현화와 함께 운동권 활동을 했던 은희, 이 세 사람이 서로의 삶에 스며들며 벌어지는 일을 기술한 것이다. 여기에는 현화의 박사 학위 논문을 지도하면서 만났던 은희, 그리고 현화와 은희의 지나온 삶의 여정이 80년대에 대학을 다니며 내가 경험했던 것들과 만나면서 벌어지는 심리적 과정에 대한 나의 이야기가 기술되어 있다. 이 글에는 현화와 은희가 살아온 삶이 나에 의해 정리 및 해석되어 있고, 이 둘의 이야기가 나를 어떻게 바꾸었는지에 대한 주관적 설명이 실려 있다. 나는 현화와 은희를 통해 나의 오래된 심리적 부채를 놓아버리며 나와 화해할 수 있었고, 운동권에 대한 나의 고정관념을 수정했으며, 내가 연구 주제로 삼고 있는 정체성을 질적 연구라는 경계 안에서 더 깊게 연구하기 위한 심리적 발판을 마련할 수 있었다.
Abstract
This study describes the happenstance in the lives of three individuals: Hyunhwa, my doctoral graduate student, Eunhee who was an activist working with Hyunhwa, and myself, a qualitative and identity researcher. The story written here is about my psychological processes burgeoning from a relationship with Eunhee, whom I met while supervising Hyunhwa's doctoral dissertation, as well as my personal experiences while attending university in the 1980s. I have summarized and interpreted Hyunhwa and Eunhee with my own perspectives. This story includes a subjective explanation of how their life stories have changed me. I was able to reconcile with myself by letting go of my old psychological burden through Hyunhwa and Eunhee, and to mend my stereotypes about the activists themselves and their community. This study also provided me a psychological stepping stone to delve into identity work within the scope of qualitative research.
