초록
Regional powers like South Africa cannot fully exercise their capability effectively without the robust support from the advanced countries in the West as well as the consent and legitimacy of the neighboring states in the region. In this sense, regional powers are confronted with quite large constraints in wielding their relative power than great powers do. Taking into consideration this critical point, thus, the paper tries not only to illuminate the conceptual understandings of regional powers distinguished from great powers and middle powers, albeit to some extent sharing similarities among these different conceptual categories, but also to review South Africa’s political and security role as a regional power in Africa and its implications for both South Africa and Africa with a special focus on the first decade of post-Apartheid.
