초록
Community based forest management (CBFM) is one of the forms of participatory forest management (PFM) introduced in Tanzania as one of the means of halting deforestation and improving livelihoods of forest dependent communities. Since its inception in 1994, over 1.6 million hectares of forest in 670 villages are under CBFM. Despite the wide spread of CBFM in Tanzania, there has been a paucity of information on how much CBFM contributes to livelihoods of local communities. Therefore, this study provides such information. There have been some elements of CBFM contribution to livelihoods of local communities in terms of conservation of forest resources (Natural capital), development of human, physical and social capitals as well as income at household level. However, it is very difficulty to point out such contribution is made by CBFM due to the reason that there are many factors running parallel in Tanzania. These factors are among initiatives done by Tanzanian government as the answer to Millennium Development Goals commissioned by United Nations.
