초록
In July of 2011, the Republic of South Sudan achieved independence, but violence has continued since. The purpose of this article is to examine what actually happened in South Sudan when a political power struggle broke out between President Salva Kiir and his former deputy Riek Machar. Moreover, this paper aims to explore further how the youngest nation is destroying itself from within. After a brief overview on the evolution of the conflict, structural complexities and various dimensions regarding the conflict are examined. Then, the concept of fragility and several problems that make South Sudan the world’s most fragile state are discussed. Outsiders, who are not familiar with a certain country’s inside affairs, tend to prejudge the conflict as the same as the genocide in Rwanda or the civil war in Somalia. However, as many scholars and regional experts pointed out, ethnicity is merely one of many dimensions of the conflict and there is no one simple factor that can be regarded as the root cause of the current crisis.
