엘리엇은 자신이 대학의 학생이었을 때 예이츠는 이미 대단한 시인이었다고 고백한 바 있다. 두 시인들의 상징주의적인 표현기법은 매우 밀접하다는 사실을 알 수 있으며, 특히 엘리엇은 몰개성을 두 가지로 나누어 평가하면서 예이츠가 이 두 가지 모두를 실현해 내기 위해 노력한 시인으로 평가한다. 그리고 그들은 지적인 작품 창작 태도를 견지하거나 음악성을 강조하고 있는 점도 흡사하다. 예이츠의 예술 세계는 “작곡된”것이라는 사실에서 우리는 예이츠가 작품 창작과정에 심혈을 기울였다는 것을 알 수 있다. 그리고 지나친 감상적 표현을 삼가려는 그의 창작 태도는 엘리엇의 객관적 상관물의 원칙과 상통한다.
Abstract
Eliot acknowledged that Yeats had already been a great poet when he was a college junior. Both poets use symbolist techniques and intellectual points of view, and emphasize musicality in their poetry. It is clear that Yeats had some influence on Eliot’s development as a poet. Both poets keep themselves from being sentimental, and Eliot’s theory of the objective correlative is a kind of literary means to overcome this sentimentality in poetry.
