초록

Heaney seeks his emblem from the legendary King Sweeney who had persecuted Bishop Ronan and finally was driven out into the wilderness in Ronan’s retaliation. Sweeney appears as a liberal poet against the oppressive religion in such books as Sweeney Astray, Station Island, and Human Chain. And each book contains Sweeney in different situations and styles. Sweeney, the legendary king, in Sweeney Astray appears through Heaney’s translation of the old Irish poem; Sweeney in Station Island is the same person as the poet in pilgrimage, leaving his Catholic community; Sweeney adapted by Heaney’s imagination in Human Chain appears in reply to the letter sent by legendary Sweeney’s wife Eorann. What is achieved through Sweeney is that Heaney draws attention to exposing the centuries-old oppression of Irish Catholicism on Irish writers; through Sweeney, Heaney creates poems in a new style.
