Abstract
]The purpose of this essay is to review the hostility between R. Wagner and O. Bi smarck. The relations between Wagner and Bismarck remain inadequately explored, with biographers of these two titans of a Wilhelmine Germany in the nineteenth century regularly overemphasizing or underpalying the importance of their relationship depending on their own political biases. The hostility between Wagner and Bismarck was not merely due to Wagner's disappointment with a Reich that failed to make him its musician laureate and refused to recognize Bayreuth festivals as an official national shrine but also revealed more fundamental and significant differences. Wagner always remained a revolutionary who sought a national regeneration opposed to Bismarckian culture.Wagner was profoundly convinced that it was his destiny to compose works that would give expression to the ture Germany. His definition of Deutschtum was dedicated to the quest for unification. The establishment of a musical shrine at Bayreuth was intended to counteract what he saw as the superficial and trivial versions of Germanness that the Bismarckian state had created. Through his festivals, he wanted to create the true German, Bismarck was not the kind of German Wagner had in mind. (Yeungnam University/khyoung36@hanmail.net)
