Abstract

Robert Bly's work consistently displays a cluster of Biblical allusions through which Bly attempts to demystify the major events of the Scripture. The close look at the Biblical allusions used in his poetry reveals that they are essential to his work. Since the Biblical allusions that he used can be one of his key poetic issues, they enable his readers to understand his poetic messages most succinctly.This paper attempts to show that Bly reveals his sense of self-discovery and immortality through Biblical allusions. Bly's poetic persona more often than not travels to the unconscious which Christianity inhibit and attempts to become whole. His frequent use of the image of darkness is related to his psychic travel to the unknown part of his mind. Bly's reader can sense that the Biblical figures such as the raven, Joseph, Jonah etc. can be his shadows.Bly, who does not accept the Christian concept of immortality, also assumes that human body is sacred since it is a locus of reproduction. He also suggests that human body is more like Noah's Ark, the symbol of salvation. Bly describes the process of human conception as life-death-resurrection cycle conceiving it as religious immortality.
