초록
Graham Greene visited the leproserie in the Congo in 1959 and a year later he published A Burnt-Out Case. Greene said that this is not a roman á clef, but an attempt to give dramatic expression to various types of belief, half-belief, and non-belief. First of all, we should consider that Greene tried to identify belief as the love of human beings and God. The protagonist, Querry won great fame and success in Europe as an architect and had close relationships with many women and enjoyed love affairs with them. But he wasn't satisfied with the fame, success and sexual desire because they weren't derived from true acts of love. He left Europe and came to the leproserie in the Congo as a mental burnt-out case who wasn't satisfied with his vocation and couldn't feel the suffering of other people. After Querry met Deo Gratias who suffered from leprosy and Marie who suffered from an unhappy marriage, Querry recognized others' sufferings and had compassion on them. Furthermore, he recovered his faith in God through human love, for God's love and human love is the same thing, like two sides of a coin.
