초록

Lady Mary Wroth's The Countess of Montgomery's Urania has mainly been discussed in the light of the author's relationship to her uncle, Sir Philip Sidney. Wroth's literary career owed a lot to Philip Sidney, who served as a role model in her attempt at writing in secular genres such as prose romance and sonnet sequence. Sidney's works become the frame of reference with which Wroth's works are compared. While dealing with a variety of themes including women's love and marriage under male-dominated society, and some scandalous stories around the court, she has given voice to the contemporary political and religious issues of her own time. This article focuses on Wroth's transformation of the political and religious situations of her time into her prose romance. Urania. She mentions the current political and religious issues in Europe, more specifically the Protestants' wishes to elect a Protestant Holy Roman Emperor. She fulfills this wish through her protagonist, Amphilanthus, who is elected Holy Roman Emperor and converts the heathens in Cyprus to Christians. While copying the Puritans' request for England's further intervention in European politics, her episode of political fantasy in Cyprus also foreshadows the imperialist expansion England is about to take. In spite of her position as a pioneer woman writer, Wroth was not free from the imperialist perception of the other, who was not Christian.
