Abstract
It is curious during the late imperial period Russian entrepreneurs participated in the massive scale of public philanthropy. The number of charity institutions and amount of donation was startling. In 1889 there were 495 public and private charity institutions, helping 430,466 peoples with 5,325,457 rubles from the interests on 24,960,000 rubles. The magnitude of Moscow charity was much greater than that of Paris, Vienna and even Berlin in the early 20th century. Russian philantrophy could be seen superior in the intensive growth and great number of charitable organizations such as, hospitals, various charitable organs, educational institutions for the poor and art patronage founded on the donations and real estate of big capitalists. Philantrophy and art patronage was the overwhelmingly favorable sphere in which Russian merchants and entrepreneurs could enjoy free expression of their public activities and promote their social prestige and self-identification. Undoubtedly their philanthropic activities helped their upward social mobility. Although Russian philanthropy were closely related to the Orthodox religion, from the late 19th century on philanthropy changed to accept more and more secular, practical and patriotic motives and aims. Their patriotism became a specific spur to larger donation. Because of the patriotism Moscow entrepreneurs took a great of part in sponsoring the artists of old Russian culture. Given the oppressive atmosphere of autocracy, philanthropic institutions could provide Moscow entrepreneurs an effective outlet to a public voices. But while the philanthropy of Moscow adhered to the traditional old culture of Russia, it had a fatal limit to hinder the entrepreneurs to think light of the progressive political thought and liberal movement of their contemporary counterpart in the European countries.
