Abstract

Toukoku was the only Japanese Modern writer who participated in the Democratic Right Movement. In early time he wanted to be a politician but his dream was changed after the Osaka affair. After that affair he only fought through Literature.Through Literature Toukoku Kitamura wanted to liberate the People and the Democratic Right Movement was his weapon. His idea was oriented to the revolution of civil minds and ideas of modern society. However, in terms of the revolution, it was difficult to establish a modern self-identity in the Meiji period. That is because the product of the modern feudalistic society fettered the ego. With Toukoku, the aggressive ideas of the People regards to revolution were good for the innovation of the existing Meiji society. Since the idealism of People is too involved with the dignity of self he became self-centered and could not assume universality. Thus, as with the idealism of People, the modern ego of Toukoku was not materialized. This is the tragedy with Toukoku. Accordingly, with Toukoku in the time of forming the modern country, the ego ended up with doubt about how it is related to the real society and what position it took.
