Abstract

The experience of learning together under a teacher representing the times and regions was the starting point for determining the social and political position beyond individual academic achievement. In 1561, when Jisan Cho Ho-ik(芝山 曺好益, 1545-1609) turned 17, he visited Yi Hwang(李滉, 1501-1570), the greatest scholar of the time, and asked for learning, which became a great turning point in his life. Around the same time, Ryu Seong-ryong(柳成龍, 1542-1607) also became a disciple of Yi Hwang. It seems that this is when the relationship between the two began. In 1567, Cho Ho-ik visited Seoul with Yi Hwang, who had been summoned by King Myeongjong, and stayed in Seoul for a month after that. At that time, Ryu Seong-ryong likely formed a close relationship with Cho Ho-ik, who had accompanied his teacher, because Ryu Seong-ryong had already secured a government post after having passed the state examination. Since then, Cho Ho-ik endured significant hardship. In 1576, he was wrongfully accused by the governor of Gyeongsang Province as a powerful local resident and was put into exile. During his long exile in Gangdong, Pyeongan-do, Cho Ho-ik focused on his scholarly pursuits, and gained fame through the education and guidance of his descendants. In 1592, the Japanese invasion of Korea broke out. Due to the overwhelming military power of the Japanese military and the rapid rise to the north, King Seonjo decided to flee the capital. When the evacuation procession reached Pyongyang, Ryu Seong-ryong conveyed Cho Ho-ik's unjust situation to King Seonjo and asked for his government post with a pardon. Finally, Cho Ho-ik was released from exile, appointed as Uigumbudosa, and was given the task of gathering soldiers and stabilizing Pyeongan-do. Ryu Seong-ryong actively supported Cho Ho-ik's volunteer army activities by writing an official letter encouraging the recruitment of soldiers and supplying weapons. Thanks to this, he successfully carried out volunteer army activities across the country beyond Pyeongan-do. After the war, the two returned to Yeongcheon and Andong, respectively, and devoted themselves to their studies, cultivating younger scholars. Their camaraderie continued during this period. Cho Ho-ik, who was deeply skilled in the study of rituals, refined his perspectives by consulting Ryu Seong-ryong on unresolved questions, sent daily greetings, and expressed continued gratitude for Ryu's assistance in the past. When Ryu Seong-ryong passed away in 1607, Cho Ho-ik lamented the loss of 'a man of talent who could rule the world,' expressing profound sorrow and respect. For the two, sharing the experience of serving a teacher as 'fellow disciples' became a basis for trusting each other and a driving force for the development of their studies. Moreover, for Cho Ho-ik, interaction with Ryu Seong-ryong exceeded academic achievements. This is because Ryu Seong-ryong had intervened to redress his injustice and ended his 17-year exile, providing an opportunity for the state to demonstrate his accumulated abilities during a national crisis.
