초록
This paper aims to develop contemporary Western literary criticism by locating the Zen Buddhist thought by way of discussing the sublime, which seems to be the most fundamental and central issue in aesthetics. The first part of this paper argues that Levinasian ethics represents Western metaphysics contemporary theory of postmodern ethics (especially in literary criticism) by examining the history of modern philosophy and criticism, Levinas's ethics is the best place to start to bridge between East and West. The ultimate task of this paper is to locate such Buddhist notions and views of “emptiness,” “middle path,” “koan”“Buddha nature,” and especially “hua-yen” in the critical theory of the West. The second half of this paper is devoted to a discussion of Buddhist philosophy that reveals the real meaning of “trancendence” that is actually most needed in the contemporary ethical literary criticism. It should be pointed out at the beginning that this paper does not refer to the matter of the faith of the believers in any religion. All this is explicated in terms of the reader's experiences―jouissance and the sublime. In the end, my idea of “the sublime subjectivity” is explained, and Nancy's aesthetic view is used as the closest thought to Buddhist philosophy.
