『조선왕조실록』은 조선시대 역사를 공부하는 데 가장 기초적인 동시에 핵심적인 사료이다. 역사 연구에서 실록을 활용하는 일반적인 방법은 당연히 실록의 내용, 즉 개별 기사를 아주 가까이에서 꼼꼼하게 읽고 분석하여 연구의 근거 자료로 삼는 것이다. 그러나 실록이라는 방대한 자료를 개인이 모두 읽고 소화하여 내용을 분석하는 작업은 사실상 불가능하다. 따라서 실록 전체를 읽기 위해서는 개별 기사로부터 거리를 두고 실록 전체를 수량적인 측면에서 분석하는 ‘멀리서 읽기’라는 접근이 필요하다. 실록의 내용을 꼼꼼하게 읽고 자료로 활용하는 일반적인 방법을 실록에 대한 ‘질적 접근’이라고 한다면, 이 글은 실록 자체를 직접적인 대상으로 삼아 실록 전체의 수량적인 정보를 분석하는 ‘양적 접근’을 시도한다. 기사수와 글자수의 변동을 검토하는 한편, 실록 원문에서 책, 지명, 인물이 등장하는 빈도수를 계산하여 시대에 따른 변화의 양상을 살펴본다. 실록에 대한 수량적인 분석은 실록이라는 자료의 성격과 조선시대의 역사적 특징을 이해하기 위한 새로운 질문을 제기하는 데 기여할 수 있다.
Abstract
The Annals of the Joseon Dynasty is the most basic and essential material for studying the history of the Joseon Dynasty. The general way to use the Annals in historical research is, of course, to read and analyze the contents of the Annals very closely and meticulously. However, it is virtually impossible for an individual to read and digest the vast data of the Annals and analyze the contents. Therefore, in order to read the Annals as a whole, an approach called 'distant reading' is necessary, which means to take a distance from individual articles and analyze the entire Annals in quantitative perspective. A general way to read the contents of the Annals is a ‘qualitative approach’. On the other hand, this article attempts a 'quantitative approach' that analyzes the quantitative information of the entire the Annals. After calculating the number of articles and letters, the frequency of occurrence of books, place names, and persons in the Annals, the pattern of changes according to the times is examined. Quantitative analysis of the Annals can contribute to raising new questions to understand the nature of the Annals and the historical characteristics of the Joseon Dynasty.
