Abstract
This essay attends to a lesser-known work of an English woman’s autobiographical religious prose of the seventeenth-century England, which is in general known as The Narrative of The Persecutions of Agnes Beaumont. Written in 1674 by a 22-year-old low-born nonconformist woman named Agnes Beaumont, this narrative which survives in a manuscript has received less critical attention than it deserves. I attempt to bring into focus on this unusual text by introducing its contextual and literary peculiarities including Beaumont’s life as well as her motivation to create The Narrative of The Persecutions of Agnes Beaumont. The purpose of this essay is twofold: to offer a detailed critical introduction that may help cultivate further discussions among critics; to suggest an angle from which we can explore the ways in which the religious and the literary are mediated.
