Abstract
This paper explores the significance of a death that occurred in a strange murder case in Toni Morrison’s Jazz. It defines the victim’s passing as a “death of substitution” for “the other,” using Emmanuel Levinas’s concept of “substitution.” The murderer is Joe Trace, a middle-aged man, and the victim is his lover Dorcas, an 18-year-old girl. She is both a “substitute” for his absent mother and an object of his desire. Dorcas partakes in a sexual affair with Joe, who is married to another woman, to fill her “inside nothing.” However, in the final moments of her life, she decides to die for him. After being shot by him, she refuses to name him as her killer in order to give him a chance to flee. Her death is a result of her love for more of “something other than herself” and “something outside herself.” She accepts responsibility for the other’s fault at the risk of her own life. “Only one apple” refers to herself, whose “death of substitution” makes her “someone irreplaceable,” a unique and singular being, as differentiated from a “substitute.” In conclusion, “death of substitution” in Jazz shows a poetic response to the philosophical demand for responsibility and substitution for the other.
