초록

This paper focuses on the schematic confrontation between the naturalistic materialism with the traditional Christian perspective by contrasting protagonists, D’Amville, an atheistic naturalist and Charlemont and Castabella, who firmly believe in Christian providence in Tourneur’s The Atheist’s Tragedy. In analyzing, this study examines how Tourneur depicts the themes of salvation and providence in terms of religious discourse of the period before and after the Reformation. The Atheist’s Tragedy contains the characteristics of late Renaissance plays after the Reformation, but presents Christian judgments that traditionally appear mainly in medieval morality plays in relation to the themes of good and evil, judgment and punishment. While Renaissance plays interpret medieval Christian doctrine within the humanist tradition, Tourneur shows the Christian judgment on divine law and spiritual corruption through the destruction of D’Amville ,an atheist in spite of controversy of the providential discourses of the time.
