초록
Leon Edel, renowned as Henry James’s biographer, shaped the field of James studies through his monumental five-volume biography and decades of critical engagement. While Edel’s work established the foundation of modern James scholarship, his psychoanalytic approach and his control over James’s archival materials provoked criticism and raised questions about his practice. Against this contested backdrop, this paper reads Henry James’s The Aspern Papers as an autobiographical meta-narrative that anticipates such tensions. The novella—centered on a biographer’s invasive pursuit of a dead poet’s private papers—reflects James’s own archival anxieties. By exploring this resonance, the paper argues that The Aspern Papers serves as a self-reflexive critique of biographical practice, illuminating the symbolic dilemma between James and Edel.
