초록

This paper examines The Twilight Saga through the lens of J. Hector St. John de Crèvecœur’s concept of “a new race of men,” arguing that Stephenie Meyer’s ethical and hybrid vampires reimagine the foundational myth of American exceptionalism. In Letters from an American Farmer (1782), Crèvecœur envisioned the American as a regenerated being of freedom and moral self-discipline, embodying the optimistic vision. Meyer’s saga transposes this ideal into a twenty-first-century Gothic landscape, where hybridity, restraint, and self-discipline become allegories of the rebirth of the American Exceptionalism. In particular, Carlisle Cullen’s self-made virtue, Bella’s own choice to become a vampire-hero against authoritative power and the ideal hybrid child Renesmee symbolize the reanimation of America’s exceptionalist dream in the 21st century America. Ultimately, Meyer’s saga fuses Gothic anxiety with American optimism, producing a “happy Gothic” narrative where darkness is domesticated and immortal hybrid vampires become the ultimate expression of national hope.
