Abstract

This study reconstructs the phonological system of Late Middle Chinese which is considered to represent the phonetic or phonological system of ca. 8th-10th century. But the tonal system is excluded in my study. I start with examining the two preceding major works of Pulleyblank and Hsueh to find out their results and some problems of their systems. The sources this study is mainly based on are as follows;Sixteen rhyme groups(16攝) represented in major early rhyme tables such as "Yunjing(韻鏡)", "Sishengdengzi(四聲等子)", "Qieyunzhinan(切韻指南)" etc. , rhymes in some Tang Poetry, some fanqie spellings of Zhu'ao(朱 ) and Huilin(慧琳)'s "Yiqiejingyinyi(一切經音義)", "Gujinyunhuijuyao(古今韻會擧要)" which is known to represent the phonetic or phonological system of the Early Yuan Dynasty. My 35 initials are almost alike to those done by predecessors, while there are some discrepancies in medials between mine and theirs. Initials of Grade III are divided into two main diversities. One is composed of acute initials belonging to the Grade III, and chongniu IV initials.(Type-A) The other is of grave initials and chongniu III initials.(Type-B) The initials of type-A and type-B are found respectively before medials /j/ and / /. Some data show that medials of Grade IV could be phonologically identical with those of type-A. I reconstruct medials of Grade II as / / so that we can explain the Old Chinese origin of this and the later change of this into /j/ or /w/ as in "Gujinyunhuijuyao(古今韻會擧要)".Endings could be classified according to rhyme groups;Endingsjwm, pn, t, k, She(攝)遇果假止蟹流效深咸臻山通江宕梗曾
