Abstract
The Mulian story was popular not only in East Asia, including Korea, China and Japan, but also among the nomadic peoples of Mongolia and Tibet whose cultures were richly influenced by Buddhism. The story of Mulian, which depicts his journey to hell to save his mother who has been cast there through evil deeds, reflects the East Asian notion of filial piety, and is suitable for teaching the Buddhist doctrine of cause and effect. One of the main characteristics of the Mulian story that was a prevalent feature in these regions is the use of images with the text. In particular, the vivid and dramatic portrayal of the various scenes of hell, Mulian’s journey within hell, and his mother’s suffering were well-suited for representation in picture form. Thus, it was natural for the Mulian story to be distributed as a set, consisting of illustrations and text. This paper, focusing on the Mulian story as a form of visual storytelling, compares the popular Mulian story as it appears in China, Korea, and Mongolia. The three sources compared are Dunhuang manuscript Mulian jiumu bianwen 目連救母變文, the Mulian Sutra Bulseol dae Mokryeon gyeong 佛說大目連經published in the middle of the Joseon Dynasty, and a 19th-century Mongolian Mulian picture book, respectively. With the exception of the Dunhuang manuscript, the source materials still contain their original illustrations. Although it no longer has its original illustrations, it is clear that it was very popular for Mulian jiumu bianwen to be performed by actors using the picture scroll. The same picture scroll form is seen in Xiangmo bianwen 降魔變文 and, together with the evidence of the use of pictures in Mulian jiumu bianwen, directly prove this hypothesis. In other words, pictures are essential elements of all three source materials from China, Korea, and Mongolia. In this paper, we first analyze the Mulian Sutra and Mongolian Mulian picture book, and then reconstruct the picture scroll of Mulian jiumu bianwen, of which the original no longer exists.
