초록
This study examines the character portrayal of Weigongzi in Sima Qian’s Weigongzi Biography through narrative structure analysis and explores Sima Qian’s perspective on talent. The research focuses on the opposing structure between Weigongzi and King Anxi of Wei, and the narrative of Weigongzi ’s encounter with Hou Ying. Sima Qian distinguished Weigongzi ’s principle of “Benevolence and Generous toward scholars(仁而下士)” from other lords of the Warring States period, emphasizing that Weigongzi ’s hospitality was genuine respect for talent based on mutual trust and national cause. In the conflict structure, the repeated emphasis on King Anxi of Wei’s “worry” and “fear” suggests that the ruler’s incompetence led to national demise. Through the mutual reference method, the Weigongzi Biography presents a moral hero narrative while the Wei Aristocratic Family reveals power relationship dilemmas. Notably, the Hou Ying narrative occupying 45% of the text demonstrates Sima Qian’s emphasis on personal relationships and inner values over political-military achievements. While presenting an ideal talent model combining both talent and virtue(才德兼备) through Weigongzi, Sima Qian soberly captures structural limitations and tragedy, reflecting his unique historical consciousness that seeks balance between historical inevitability and individual contingency.
