초록
This study aims to examine the roles of alcohol and tea in the poetry of Bai Juyi. With a genuine affection for both beverages, Bai Juyi gave each of them a function in his poetry to express his emotions. The drinking poems primarily address his attitudes toward the harsh realities of life, the pleasures derived from drinking, and the friendships formed through drinking. In contrast, his tea poems reflects an attitude of adapting to chaotic circumstances and nurturing friendships in moments of calm. Despite their different functions, there also are several poems that feature both alcohol and tea, and those can be assorted by the content. When alcohol is consumed before tea in the poems, it reveals that alcohol can evoke physical and mental discomfort after the momentary joy, while tea helps to embrace that discomfort. Meanwhile, when both alcohol and tea are shown at the same time in the poems, they depict moments of sharing emotions with guests by drinking both, enjoying nature through both beverages, or enhancing his enjoyment of the current situation. In contrast to poems focused solely on alcohol or tea, these works demonstrate a desire to accept both the bitterness or the joy of his life and reality. This feature reflects the complex interaction of the unique functions of alcohol and tea within Bai Juyi’s distinctive poetic style.
