Abstract
One of the generally recognized observations on the history of rhetoric is that the rhetoric decayed in the Middle Ages. If the great classical rhetoric became the ‘decreased’ rhetoric in the modern times, what exactly was lost in the Middle Ages and why? This article attempts to search for an answer to these questions by understanding the notion of topos in the medieval logic. Since Aristotle, the topos (lat. locus) served as ways of finding an appropriate argument, regardless of its applied realm, logic or rhetoric. Logic and rhetoric were united together under this broad-ranged character of the topos as warrant for the persuasive power of arguments. However, Boethius tried to establish rather a sharp distinction between logic and rhetoric, based on the types of validities: self-evident, necessarily true logical topoi on the one hand, and probable rhetorical topoi on the other. Influenced by this, the scholastic tradition sought to understand the logical topos in its supposed necessary validity, in contrast to probable rhetorical topos. For the medieval rhetoric, this means that henceforth the logical topoi were regarded as belonging exclusively to the logic: the topoi, which the rhetoric shared with the logic previously, were now separated from the rhetoric. Thus one of the main parts the rhetoric, the invention of arguments, was reduced to be based on the probable arguments. As generally known, the formalization of topos in scholastic tradition culminated in Ockham’s rules of inference (regulae consecutionis). But the ‘logical’ topoi, which could not be easily integrated into formalized logic, seemed to be neglected afterwards in the logical tradition, and never returned to the rhetorical tradition.
