Abstract
This article is a part of the traditional disputations about Ovid’s claim that he has originated a new genre of literature with the Heroides. It aims to assert, with the introductory epistle of Penelope in Heroides as an example to be taken, that Ovid’s novelty is concerned above all with the creation of the realistic character of Penelope, as opposed both to the epic and to the elegiac. Some scholars argued that Ovid’s originality consist in the change of the epic Penelope into the elegiac. In truth Ovid’s Penelope interprets all the situation with the absence of Odysseus from the viewpoint of love. But Ovid’s Penelope, as we assert, is preferably a balanced between the elegiac and the epic; she is not such a “staid character” as in the Homeric Odysseia, not such a “throughly frightened” character as in the Roman Love elegies; Ovid’s Penelope is a woman in reality, who has never lost herself in timor and querela, never lost humor all for the desperations. In this sense Ovid's Heroides are the beginning innovation from the Roman elegiac tradition.
