초록

Even after Pompey had done much to suppress it, piracy remained an integral part of the mediterranean way of life and its economy because of the inherent limits to controlling the sea and its adjacent territories, held in contempt and dreaded, though it was. The differences between piracy, privateering, bucaneering and other forms of booty-making were only slight in antiquity; the modern world, however, has introduced strict legal differences between different forms of illegal and legal violence at sea. What posterity owes to the Greeks with regard to piracy is not only something of the terminology, but also of the perspectives on piracy: The romantic depiction of the robbers’ world, exotic metaphors and topics to depict this world - this sounds as familiar as do early atempts at limiting piracy and its danger for ordinary citizens.
