Abstract

The film Death Ray on a Coral Island, released in 1980, is the first genuine science fiction film produced in China after the era of reform and opening up. This film was adapted from a novel of the same name which was written by science fiction writer Tong Enzheng and was published in the People’s Literature in 1978. The original novel Death Ray on a Coral Island of this film conveyed the importance of patriotism and the development of science & technology, and thereby earned recognition from the mainstream literary community. It was made into a film after Deng Xiaoping, the paramount leader of the People’s Republic of China, advocated the slogan “Science and technology are productive forces” at the National Science Conference in 1978. It is necessary to pay attention to the film Death Ray on a Coral Island made in such a background, since the film offers insights into the political and cultural environment of China during the early stage of reform and opening up when the nation was in the course of establishing its identity newly. Superficially, the film depicts an imaginary future completed by the utopia of science & technology and socialism. However, it intricately reflects political subconsciousness and the public psyche distinct from typical socialist narratives. Despite being produced to emphasize the values of socialism, the film has the admiration for Western culture found in the scenes depicting advanced technology, exotic settings, and modern lifestyles. The protagonists being portrayed as Chinese scientists working abroad imply the aftermath of the Cultural Revolution, and also make the audience aware of China’s lag in scientific and technological advancements. Although the film conveys the message of China’s superiority under socialism and the return to the homeland, it depicts China in an ambiguous aspect in comparison with the enchanting portrayal of the West.
