Abstract

This paper examines the lives and works of Namgok Jo Gye-myeong (1708–1737) and Cheongnyeongheon Jo Gu-jin (1723–1737), who were promising literary figures in the Pungyang Jo clan but died young. Both of them studied under Donggye Jo Gui-myeong (1693–1737) and received high praise for their talents. The works of Jo Gye-myeong, Namgokgo, and Jo Gu-jin, Cheongnyeongheon Yuju, were included as appendices in the Donggyejip. Beyond being disciples of Jo Gui-myeong, they each possessed a distinct identity as outstanding individual writers. This paper first examines their lives using the primary sources Jo Sa-sim Jeon and Jo Gu-jin Jeon left by Jo Hyeon-myeong, and clarifies the circumstances of their compilation. Following this, it selects and critically analyzes two of their most accomplished works from Namgokgo and Cheongnyeongheon Yuju: Jiyanghyeongmyomun and Dorimhuteukjujeon. The Jiyanghyeongmyomun is an excellent piece of writing in the 'sik' style, which poetically expresses the author's situation, while Dorimhuteukjujeon, which features an ox as its protagonist, stands out for its appropriate use of classical allusions and humor in a gajeonche narrative.
